Congratulations, you’ve spent thousands of dollars on your brand new 4k video camera. You even risked your life climbing to the top floor of an abandoned building to get that great aerial shot. Unfortunately, your content has a dirty little secret: IT HATES YOU! (ok..ok…”Hate” is a strong word, but it is definitely disappointed.)
It’s mad that you’ve spent all this time, effort, and money making the visual quality of your production awesome, but then you just slapped some junky background music underneath…or worse…no music at all! #AudibleGasp
Here are a couple helpful tips in choosing the correct soundtrack for your content:
Beware if the Bad Composer
Just because your cousin plays bass in the hottest cover band on the Jersey Shore, does not mean he’s a great choice for your soundtrack. “But Justin, he’s free and I’m working on a tight budget.” I’ve gotten a couple free samples of Axe, it doesn’t mean they’re a good choice for my dating life.
When choosing your music it is imperative that you use a trusted source like Muserk.com. We hand curate our music so you can be sure each track is coming from a professional. #ShamelessPlug
We’ve all had that one friend that thinks they are the next big fashion icon. No matter what they say, Hawaiian shirts and polka dots will never match! #SorryWierdAl
There are some simple ways to make your soundtrack match your content. Of course, this is subjective, but try matching the content of your video to the feeling of your music. If the video is sad try searching for some sad music. If you’re video is something exciting like sports recaps or hang gliding videos, try searching for something that is energetic or aggressive. Seems simple, so why not try it out. #KnowingIsHalfTheBattle
You can always download a free watermarked track from our site to start working with, but we’ve come up with a couple very effective methods to help you find the right track fast. Try one of these on for size:
Video Merge Tool
Sometimes the easiest way to tell if a piece of music is working is by auditioning it against your cut. We’ve built a fantastic tool called the Video Merge Tool right into Muserk.com so you can do just that. The best part is, it’s completely free to use. The Video Merge Tool allows you to upload your video so that you can easily audition tracks underneath.
If you are an Adobe Premiere Pro user you might want to try our Adobe Add On, Muserk for Premiere Pro. You can search for tracks and work with watermarked versions right from your edit suite. Once you find a track you love you can convert the watermarked version into the final. (Even if you’ve chopped it up in the edit suite.) #Magic
Room To Breathe
You ever try to talk over the ramblings of a toddler? It’s hard. It is also hard to get your message across if your soundtrack is too busy.
If your content has a voice-over throughout, try picking a track that has a sparse arrangement. This way you can still elevate the emotion of your content without getting in the way of what your Voice-Over Artist is literally trying to say.
Dump The “Not-So-Good” Stuff
You ever have a relationship that wasn’t that good, but wasn’t that bad either? Sometimes, that’s the hardest relationship to end. If the music in your content is just “alright,” it’s time to dump that zero and get yourself a hero.
Bottom line, you should love the soundtrack in your content. If there is a moment that’s not working, challenge yourself to find something better.
Making content that truly moves an audience is not by chance. It is calculated and thoughtful and not the easiest thing to do. BUT, if you continue to make conscious decisions about every aspect of your content, you are on the right path. Start by upgrading your soundtrack. Your audience will thank you.
